My Google business listing disappeared - what to check
๐ August 21, 2026 | โ๏ธ Don Curtin
Yesterday customers could find you. Today the listing feels gone. That spike of adrenaline is rational. What isn’t rational is rewriting your entire website at midnight before you’ve checked five boring things.
Work this list in order. Stop when you find the actual problem.
1. Are you looking with owner-eyes?
Sign out. Try another phone. Ask a friend in the same town to search the exact business name.
Owner accounts and staff phones lie kindly. They remember you. Google sometimes shows you your own profile in ways strangers don’t see โ or the reverse happens after an edit and you panic first.
2. Open the Business Profile manager
Go to the official Google Business Profile flow and look at status.
- Suspended โ go straight to Google Business Profile suspended โ what to do. Don’t post updates hoping it wakes up.
- Verification needed / pending โ finish that. Nothing else matters until it’s done.
- Active but customers can’t find you โ keep going; you may have a duplicate, a filter, or a Maps surface issue. See GBP not showing in search and Maps.
3. Hunt duplicates
Search the business name plus the old address, the new address, and the phone number separately. Google-generated listings and old venue pages stick around like chewing gum.
Two pins fighting each other is a classic “we disappeared” story โ you didn’t vanish; Google started preferring the wrong twin.
4. Did you lose access?
If the profile moved to an ex-employee’s login, a previous agency, or a personal Gmail you no longer have, it can feel deleted when it’s merely locked. That’s an ownership problem: someone else claimed my Google Business Profile.
5. Big edits land slowly โ and sometimes sideways
Address changes, category swaps, name tweaks. Google re-evaluates. Visibility can wobble. That doesn’t mean you should thrash the listing daily “to force a refresh.” Thrashing makes it worse.
6. Website vs listing
Confirm the website still resolves and isn’t accidentally blocking Google. Listing panic and index panic get tangled. Quick torch: how to check if my website is on Google.
What not to do in the first hour
- Create a second brand-new profile “for safety”
- Stuff keywords into the business name
- Pay the first tool ad that promises instant restoration
- Post a furious public review of Google from the company account
I’ve watched people create the duplicate they’re about to spend months killing. Don’t be that story.
Where this sits in the wider picture
Disappearances are a fork under why doesn’t my business show up on Google?. Name the state first. Strategy second.
