Someone else claimed my Google Business Profile - what now?

This one feels personal. An ex-manager, a previous SEO firm, a landlord, a random claim โ€” and suddenly you can’t edit the listing that represents your livelihood.

Stay boring. Boring wins ownership disputes more often than rage.

First: is it ownership, suspension, or a duplicate?

Wrong label, wrong process.

Try the polite route once

If you know who has access (old agency, former partner), email them and request ownership transfer. Give a deadline. Keep it in writing.

Plenty of these resolve with one adult conversation. Some don’t.

Use Google’s ownership tools

Google documents how to request access or ownership when someone else manages the profile (again: help URLs move; use Google’s current Business Profile help if the link rots).

You’ll usually need to prove you’re associated with the business. Have the website, phone, paperwork, and consistent name/address ready. Don’t submit fiction.

What not to do

Do not create a second official profile with a slightly different name “so we have something live.” You will invent a duplicate war that lasts longer than the original dispute.

Do not pay a stranger who DMs you on Facebook promising to “pull ownership overnight.”

Do not change the website domain every fortnight hoping Google “resets.” Chaos is not evidence.

Agencies and leftover access

If a marketing firm set the profile up under their company login, get ownership transferred as part of ending the contract โ€” ideally before you end it. Future you will thank present you.

Same for staff: Business Profile access is not a souvenir.

While you wait

You can still improve the website, clarify NAP consistency, and make sure indexing isn’t also on fire. You cannot fully control Maps without the profile. That’s the hard truth; pretending otherwise wastes weeks.

Bigger map

Ownership fights sit under why doesn’t my business show up on Google?. Neighbouring pages cover Maps and GBP not showing.

Want help preparing the request?

Free visibility check. Tell me who you think controls it and what proof you already have. I’ll suggest a clean sequence. I won’t claim I can override Google.
