Impressions up, clicks down in Google Search Console - what it means

๐Ÿ“… August 21, 2026

The graph is a classic: impressions climbing, clicks soft or falling, CTR looking like it’s fallen off a chair. People screenshot it and write eulogies for organic traffic.

Sometimes the eulogy is earned. Sometimes you’re misreading a report that was never designed to be a full story.

Search Console shows impressions. Clicks look like a rounding error. The first emotional response is “Google broke us.” Sometimes that’s directionally true. Often it’s lazier than that: you’re being shown for queries you were never going to win the click on.

The site: search (two minutes)

  1. Open Google in a normal browser window.
  2. Type site:yourdomain.co.uk โ€” swap in your real domain, no https://, no trailing junk.
  3. Look at what comes back.

Useful result: your homepage and a handful of real pages. Good enough signal that you’re not invisible.
